Middlesbrough suffered defeat on the road at Stoke as the Vertu Motors-backed side lost ground in the race to secure promotion from the EFL Championship.

‘Boro headed into the game bidding to bounce back from a home loss to Plymouth in the previous game and came close to hitting the front in the opening minutes when Riley McGree burst into the box and was denied by Daniel Iversen.

Emmanuel Latter Lath saw a shot cleared off the line as the visitors continued to push for the opening goal but five minutes before the break it was Stoke who went ahead as a low shot from Bae Junho beat Seny Dieng in the 'Boro goal.

Stoke started to create more chances after the break, with Josh Laurent denied by Dieng after a mistake at the back gifted the home side the ball, and the pressure on the defence eventually resulted in a second goal.

A corner from the right hand side found Lewis Baker on the edge of the box and his shot took a deflection that carried it past Dieng and into the net to secure three points for the home side.

‘Boro now sit twelve points off the top six in 14th place in the table ahead of the visit of Norwich City.
