Sunderland slipped to defeat against Millwall at the Stadium of Light as hopes of a top ten finish in the EFL Championship came to an end for the Vertu Motors-backed side.

The Black Cats were unbeaten in three games going into the match, with the visitors knowing that victory for them for the third game in a row would be enough to secure safety.

The game itself would be a cagey affair devoid of many major chances, although Sunderland had more of the ball in the early stages, with Dan Ballard heading a chance over the bar.

With the home side having more of the ball, Millwall would struggle to create much around the Sunderland goal – with the two sides level at half-time as a result.

Sunderland almost hit the front when substitutes Abdoullah Ba and Adil Aouchiche combined to create one of the best chances but against the run of play it was Millwall who instead got the breakthough.

That goal came from a man well known to the Sunderland fans, with former player Duncan Watmore converting a cross from Ryan Longman with an effort into the roof of the net.

It leaves Sunderland – who had almost 70% possession in the match – sitting 13th in the table ahead of the final two games, against Watford and Sheffield Wednesday.
